So why the blog and what its about?

Hi there and welcome to my first attempt at blogging. I hope you enjoy what’s written here and join me as I journey through a reinvention learning lots of new things and applying myself in very different ways to those my career has demanded in the last 30 years or so.

Having spent most of my working life in academia I decided a change was needed…perhaps it was the arrival of the big ‘5-0’ birthday a couple of years back which spurred me on to finally grab a part of life for myself and chance my arm at new things.

So that said one of my lifelong ambitions is to write…yeah I subscribe to us all having that novel inside ourselves. So a big part of this blog will be about my journey as an aspiring author. I have written plenty of academic works, but fiction writing is going to be an entirely different and interesting ball game. To that end I start a writing course at the Faber Academy in London later this month. I’ll keep you posted on how it’s going and share the highs and lows, the smiles and the frustrations. I’ll also review the books that I have been reading along the way.

Having been a scientist all my life I am also opening up and tuning into my artistic side by learning new crafts and skills. I also keep myself busy with a local market stall once a week, where I sell homemade cakes, chutneys, jams and marmalades. So as I learn new things I’ll take you through the crafting experiences and the foodie creations. Hence the title…‘A bit of this ‘n’ that’…the main thrust will be the writing and its associated research with crafting and foodie extras.

I hope you will join me on my journey and maybe even feel inspired to have a go at some of the things I post.
